Happy Bday: Juan Dixon, Keith Booth & Brian Roberts
Happy birthday Juan Dixon. I’ve already written a post about Juan being my favorite college basketball player of all time, you can read it here. Happy 31st Mr. Dixon!
Happy birthday Keith Booth. Wow, 2 of my favorite basketball players of all time were born on the same day! Keith was a part of Maryland’s renaissance period of 94-97. He was the first Baltimore area player to commit to UMD after the Bob Wade era ended in NCAA violations. Keith went to 4 NCAA tournaments and 2 Sweet 16’s while at Maryland. Keith is among MD’s all time leaders in points, rebounds and steals and is a member of the UMD Hall of Fame. Keith won a NBA Championship with the Bulls during the 97-98 seasons. Keith is now entering his 6th season as an assistant under Gary Williams. Happy 35th Mr. Booth.
Happy birthday Brian Roberts. Brian just finished his 9th season with the Orioles, another stellar performance for one of baseball’s best 2nd basemen. Brian batted .289-16-79 last season and added 30 SB’s and 56 doubles! Brian also scored a career high 110 runs last season, his 3rd consecutive season of 100+. Brian is fast moving up the Orioles all time offensive records, ranking in or near the top ten in several categories including 3rd all time in steals. With the likely departure of Melvin Mora, Brian will become the longest tenured Oriole. I hope the O’s can turn it around before Brian’s gone; he’s a hard-nosed ball player that deserves to win. Happy 32nd Mr. Roberts.
Cheers and Hail

The O’s: Sleepwalking Thru September
I feel the same way guys!
Since 2000, excluding the 2004 season (the season the O’s finished 3rd) the Orioles are 69-153 in September. That’s a .325 winning percentage. Historically, this team packs it in sometime in August and just gives up. They are 0-2 so far this year. The team lacks heart…it lacks fire. And quite frankly, after 12 years I’m growing tired of it. I’m tired of dropping $250 (or whatever it is now) for the Extra Innings package and having the O’s be 20 games out in July. DirecTV does not issue refunds, not even pro-rated ones.
Trembley needs to go. He’s a nice guy and I was a supporter early on, but he’s done nothing with this team. I want a link to the “Oriole way.” Give me Rick Dempsey, Rich Dauer or my #1 choice Bill Ripken.
I’m so frustrated and angry over the Orioles and the same old pitiful performance year in and year out. It’s not realistic for me to say I’m never going to root for them again…because after 30+ years they are a part of my makeup. But, I need to start getting some return on my investment…and it needs to come soon.
Help me baby Jesus…
Cheers and Hail

Peyton Manning: It’s Hip To Be Square
Peyton Manning may just be the coolest dork in history. He keeps popping up in cool places, with cool people, but…looking like a CPA. Last off-season was dedicated to commercials and SNL. This year, he’s partying in Key West and New York with rock stars!
Last March, Manning became the first person in the history of civilization to sing a David Allen Coe song wearing a polo and khaki shorts. He earned a trifecta by performing his karaoke at Sloppy Joe’s in a duet with Kenny Chesney. So, he’s way cool for being in Key West at Sloppy Joes, singing with Kenny Chesney…but he’s the only person in the joint wearing my uncle’s favorite golf outfit.
Cut to Friday night in New York. Better Than Ezra (one of my favorite bands) is rocking the house. During their performance of “King of New Orleans,” they bring out the Manning brothers. What kind of outfit are the Manning brothers working for the big show? What any one of us would…your standard button up shirt and blazer. They proceeded to fire some footballs out into the crowd (cool) and look very awkward moving to the music. So once again, cool for being there…but very dorky.
Sounds like the story of my life.
Cheers and Hail

Happy Anniversary To The Danny
10 years ago this month we met the new owner of the Washington Redskins. He was 34 years old, wearing a Redskin’s belt buckle and a burgundy and gold tie. He was also wearing a smile that no one could wipe away.
What a difference 10 years makes! Some highlights from the interview.
* Obviously he loves the Redskins. Skins belt buckle, burgundy and gold tie, and the reason for buying the Skins, “I love the Redskins.”
* 10 years ago Dan Rooney and the other old school owners thought Dan was awesome and gave him a standing ovation when his approval was announced. Now…not so much.
* Mr. Snyder is a “team player.”
* #1 priority day 1, “to get the Redskins back where they belong.” I’m assuming this meant the Super Bowl, not 8-8.
* Was afraid he was going to wake up any minute and find out he’s not the owner of the Skins. I’ve spent the past 10 years hoping I was going to wake up and find out he’s not the owner of the Skins!
* “We are not going to sit around idle, we are action takers.” Who is the we? Does he have a mouse in his pocket? Or maybe he has a mini-me? Or maybe he’s the mini me?
* The rumors of finding “sexy” names to become members of the Redskins organization started from day 1…Don Shula?
I hope to see Dan being interviewed soon with a Super Bowl Champion hat on and a smile from ear to ear. Happy Anniversary!
Cheers and Hail

One reason only…Caddyshack II. So let’s remake Caddyshack. You’re the producer, your vote counts. I’ll leave the polls open for a week and then we will see who are new stars are.
