The Entertainment For Super Bowl XVII Was A Bit Lacking
The Super Bowl is no longer just a game played for the Vince Lombardi trophy, it’s arguably the biggest entertainment event on the planet. The commercials may be paid more attention too than the actual plays on the field. The halftime show has been played by some of the biggest names in music during the past decade (Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones & Bruce Springsteen among others) and the National Anthem also brings out the best musical acts in the world. However, things were much different 30 years ago when the Redskins played in Super Bowl XVII.
Sgt. Callahan from Police Academy sang the National Anthem. Leslie Easterbrook is more well known for her rack than she is her singing voice. At the time, Police Academy hadn’t even come out yet…so a few Americans may’ve recognized her as the neighbor from Laverne & Shirley. We’ve got serious star power here! Easterbrook would go on to reprise her role as Callahan in all 7 Police Academy movies and appear in another 80′s comedy Private Resort. She may not have been an impressive opening act for a Super Bowl but she does have a place in my early teen spank bank.
The halftime entertainment was brought to you by the Los Angeles Super Drill Team. The drill team performed something called the “KaleidoSUPERscope”…no word on whether they had any wardrobe malfunctions. Not sure if the Los Angeles “Super Drill Team” was a bunch of road workers, work release prisoners or male porn stars.
The entertainment for the Redskins appearance in Super Bowl XLVIII will be announced later in the year.
Editors Note:
In honor of this post I’d like to give a shout out to Ken & Kevin from Hogs Haven. You can find them doing their podcast weekly from the Blue Oyster.

Throwback Tuesday: Pinch Me
Every Tuesday Fatpickled will stroll down memory lane and re-post a blog from the past. This post originally debuted January 30, 2009.
Sunday Jan 18, 2008
The Skins have just won a birth in the Super Bowl (against the Steelers) by defeating the Cardinals 27-21. I have texted, emailed, and called every person I have a way of contacting to discuss the game and the Super Bowl. I go on to say “Hail to the Redskins,” we’re going to the Super Bowl,” and “F-yeah” a thousand times this night. After everyone stops corresponding with me, I sit alone in my chair drinking a beer, reflecting upon my Skins. I am proud.
Monday Jan 19 - Monday Jan 26
The week was spent networking with all my contacts (I have none) to try and secure Super Bowl tickets. General Motors comes thru with 2 club seats to the big game (because it’s my dream, and in my dream the auto industry is rockin!) An executive who works for the NFL really likes my blog, and secures me a press pass for media day as well as the Gridiron Greats dinner. Try, try, try as I may, I cannot score Maxim party passes.
Tuesday Jan 27 - Media Day
I know I need to stand out, so I dress myself in a giant pickle costume. I have the word “FAT” painted across my pickle chest. Portis asks to borrow my costume for a future interview. I see the sportscaster George Michael, and tell him it’s good to see him again. He must not recognize me in my pickle costume. “George, I’m the guy who always tells you that you were awesome in Silence of the Lambs.” I ask some F’ed up questions to the Skins and Steelers, some are answered, others get me an inch away from getting my ass beat. I somehow talk Troy Polamalu into letting me cut off a lock of his hair.
Wednesday Jan 28 - Gridiron Greats
I’m here at the Hard Rock Casino with 100 of the greatest players of all time. I’m in awe, and this dinner is for an awesome cause. My pickle costume is put away, and my questions are honest and sincere. The dinner is buffet style, and as I approach the buffet, so is Michael Irvin. In one fluid motion, I nudge Irvin to the side, button hook, and while shielding him, grab a plate. Michael is so impressed by this “offensive pass interference,” he invites me to be on his reality show. I win and I must go to training camp with the Cowboys, where I show flashes of being a 35 yr old Tim Dwight. Ultimately I am cut, but not before I photocopy the playbook and turn it over to the Redskins.

1991 Redskins = GOAT
Playboy knows how to pick em!
GOAT = Greatest of All-Time. That’s where the 1991 Redskins edition ranks on the list of all-time Redskins teams. This was a topic that was brought up a couple weeks back by ESPN’s NFC East Blog and was followed up by confirmation from Redskins blogger Matt Terl and confirmed by 68% of the fans.
The 1983 team was good, really good. They held the record for points in a season for nearly 15 years and almost went undefeated. That team went 14-2 and each of the 2 losses came by only one point! Unfortunately, the 83’ squad went on to lose the Super Bowl by nearly 30 points and that unfortunate game pushes the 83’ team to second on the list. For me, 82’ comes in 3rd place and the 87’ Super Bowl Champs come in at #4. Rounding out the top 5 would be the 1972 team.
As brought up in the previously mentioned blog posts, the 1991 Redskins were dominating in every aspect of the game. The team had 8 Pro Bowlers, no other Redskins team has had more than 4 since. The Redskins Pro Bowl players came from the offense, defense and special teams:
QB Mark Rypein
RB Earnest Byner
WR Gary Clark
OG Mark Schlereth
OT Jim Lachey
CB Darrel Green
DE Charles Mann
PK Chip Lohmiller
Lohmiller outscored the entire 1991 Indianapolis Colts! It’s hard to tell which side of the ball the Redskins were better on and that’s one of the biggest reasons the 91’ team is the greatest ever. The team ranked near the top of the league in nearly every major statistical category.
Offense
#1 in scoring with 485 pts or 30.3 per game
#1 in rushing TD’s
#1 in yards per pass attempt
#4 in rushing yards per game
#4 in total offense
#5 in passing yards per game
#7 in rushing yards per game
Defense
#1 in points differential
#1 in takeaway/giveaway differential
#2 in interceptions
#2 in total points allowed
#3 in yards allowed per pass play
#3 in total forced turnovers
#3 in total defense
#3 in rushing yards allowed
#3 in sacks
Maybe the defense was better. On special teams Lohmiller led the league in scoring, FG’s and XP’s. Brian Mitchell averaged 13.3 yards per punt return, or approximately 10 yards more than a Randle-El return.
Teams like this come around every 20 years or so….by my estimation we’re due!
Thank you to the 91’ Skins…the GOAT.
Cheers and Hail

Super Bowl XLIV: Pickin On The NFL
Who dat? Dat be the Super Bowl champions? No…really? For the past 2 weeks I’ve told anyone who asked for my opinion that the Colts would win the game. In fact, I told my co-workers this morning the Colts would win by 2 touchdowns. I mean…it’s hard not to believe that if Tony Dungy believes it. But, I guess I drank the Saint’s Kool-Aid for breakfast because I’m officially going on record as picking the Saints to win the game.
Picking the Saints definitely puts me in the minority as most of the experts are picking the Colts; even most of the celebrities are picking the Colts. But hey, I’m in good company…if the Saints are good enough for Phyllis Diller, they’re good enough for me! Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir (what’s that guy been smoking) even picks the same final score as I do…Saints 30 Colts 28. Who cares what the “experts” think with all their breaking down game film and well-informed information? I feel like I’m in good company with Phyllis and Bob.
It’s tough to pick against Peyton Manning, he may be the best I ever saw. The key to game will come early, with the Saints needing to do 1 of 2 things. The Saints need to come up with a couple of stops early, or if not, they need to answer the Colts scores. The Saints falling behind early would not be a good recipe for winning. Hopefully, Gregg Williams will bring a solid defensive game plan to the table and try to create some confusion for Manning…something that is not easy to do. I’m predicting a Joseph Addai fumble at some point in this game to swing things in the Saints favor.
So there you have it…put some Jambalaya in the crock pot, cue up ‘When the Saints Go Marching In’ and enjoy the game. Maybe I’ll cruise on over to Orlando this week and see Drew Brees at Disneyworld. Saints 30 Colts 28 Cheers and Hail
