Vonnie Holliday: Most Of What You Hear About Albert Is True

Vonnie Hollidaywas our guest on Pickled Hogs Radio Thursday night and he proved to attack our interview like he does opposing QB’s. The Redskins defensive end and player rep shared with us some information on the inside workings of the CBA and weighed in on Albert Haynesworth. Here’s a couple highlights:

On keeping teammates aware of the CBA negotiations and if they’re in the dark (via Kevin):

Well you know it gets all up in the legal stuff. And I sit on the board cuz I’m a rep and I’m privy to a little more than the other guys are. And that’s just because we have to maintain an edge if you will. And it’s negotiations and the whole process. I try to be as upfront and honest with the guys as I can be, or as possible. But at the same time there’s alot of stuff that’s just uncertain - it’s uncharted territory for us. And so we just don’t know what’s going to happen. And on one hand the owner tell us we have these “private meetings being held, and on the other hand and you know their preparing for an 18 game season. So there’s alot of mixed messages sent out there. Not only thru the media but as far as the info we receive as reps. So its very difficult at times because I know there’s alot of people, our players don’t understand whats going on. Alot of times I’m a player advocate trying to answer questions for these guys and encouraging them to call up their reps. If I dont’ have the answer then I’m gonna call up our player advocate.

On what goes on in those private meetings and if the information trickles down to the players (via Kevin):

We have selected an exec committee and that’s why you see these guys. Jeff Saturday and Vrabel, Brees and those guys - you see them alot and hear about them alot because they are actually in the meetings and going to negotiations and talks with the owners and the legal team there. We don’t even get all that information from those guys. So about once every 2 weeks or whenever something significant happens in a meeting then we get a call or I get a text at 7 in the morning saying “call this person or call that player advocate quote, unquote because there is something to discuss, this may happen or that may happen. Are we prepared to accept this or not this. That’s kind of what goes on. And to be honest there’s not alot going on. And yes we are having conversations but nothing significant yet has been passed down to the board for us to vote on, for us to say yay or nay.

On the 18 game season leaked out - is that a power move by the league (via Kevin)

Personally, my personal opinion, I think it’s the 18 game season - you know it’s more of a distraction out there, it’s to cause confusion to rattle our guys, to get us stirred up and possible cause some kind of distension - we don’t know. Like I said on one hand we are negotiating. We got big-wigs coming to these meetings - these quote, unquote private meetings that aren’t so private, that everyone is aware of. And on the other hand you have talks of an 18 game season, so we felt confident, hopeful, and we were called and said we were gonna be meeting and told these meetings were going to be taking place in private, but at the same time we have to be prepared too. Because you know, in the same week you hear about the 18 game season, so like I said there’s alot of uncertainty. and its unfortunate and theres alot of guys out there that don’t understand. We encourage them to please when they have these questions and they feel like they are in the dark to call up and as much as I can because alot of times I feel like I’m in the dark. Out of nowhere we were having the private talks, then I turn on ESPN and on twitter and there is talk about an 18 game season. So that’s totally out of left field for me.

On Haslett’s comments about Haynesworth and Hollidays feelings about AH (via Doug):

You know I did get a chance to see that and I was a little surprised by that. I know there’s not alot of talk going on in football right now, but to have that candid of a conversation,by the defensive coordinator, I was a little surprised. I know we’ve had those conversations before. I was certainly surprised that he went on and was that frank about things. We all know what kind of guy Albert is. And problems that he’s had with the Redskins. You know alot of stuff unfortunately that you hear is true, it is. Here’s a guy Albert Hanesworth, the disappointing part of Albert is…this guy could be one of the most dominating defensive players to play the game. And it’s unfortunate that all of this side-stuff distracted him from, not only to be the most highest paid defensive player, he’s a high-profile guy. And it’s mostly because of negative stuff, bad stuff, it’s not about what he’s doing on the field. When this guy makes up his mind to do so, he can dominate a game. You know you saw it last year in the Chicago game, he got mad, he went out, they put him in some good situations and he played the way you expect a guy you paid that kind of money to play. You know as a player you don’t want to get caught up in…as a teammate, I could careless. Yeah, Monday thru Friday when we are down on the field your talking to the media, your talking to the coaches, you are talking to the owner, yeah you know handle your business. Do your business, but when you go on the field I just need to know that I’m going to get your best effort. You are going to give me 100%. And I can depend on you and you are going to be accountable and I’m going to give the same - that’s all I can ask. And that’s been my only problem with Albert, cause that has not been the case.

Reggie Jones Is Really Good At Madden

Reggie Jones was our special guest last week on Pickled Hogs Radio. The Redskins snapped Jones off the Saints practice squad late last year with eyes on him being a contributor in 2011…more on that at the bottom of the post.

Towards the end of our interview Ken Meringolo of Hogs Haven asked Reggie about his Madden game. Turns out Reggie played in a league with other NFL players including several Redskins and Maurice Jones-Drew. A warning to gamers out there…MJD might be sore loser. Here’s Reggie talking about playing in MJD’s league:

I actually played against Horton and Kareem and they probably don’t want me to tell this, but I was in their dynasty. They invited me to dynasty, Jones-Drew was the commissioner and I ran thru every single person in that dynasty. I went undefeated. I was beating people, like 78 to 3 and 120 to 10…you know I was blowing them out. So, I win the Super Bowl and then I go back to start the new season and I see I’m kicked out the league. So, then I’m thinking, who does that? Who invites new competition in, then kicks them out once they realize that they can’t beat them? That’s not cool.

As far as Jones chances on the field, I’m telling you all now…remember his name. Jones already has a Super Bowl ring with the Saints and has learned under coaches like Gregg Williams and Jerry Glanville. He’s got a positive attitude, he’s working hard and his goal is to be a starter next season. Here’s what Reggie had to say about the upcoming season:

I was told when I came in, I’m gonna come in competing for the starting spot at corner and I plan on putting in the work I need to put in to go ahead and take that spot. I mean, there’s a lot of talented guys on the roster at that position but I’m also talented and I feel like I’m gonna excel and go ahead and work myself into that #1 position alongside D-Hall on the other side.

Jeremy Jarmon Does A Good Colonel Jessup

Last night the guys from Hogs Haven and I interviewed Redskins DE Jeremy Jarmon for the 7th episode of our Pickled Hogs Radio show. This episode featured some of our best work yet, as well as some of our worst (we set up a hour long show to only stream for 30 minutes). Regardless of the technical difficulties, I think we’re really starting to hit our stride and the shows entertainment value continues to rise.

And if you want entertainment, then you must listen to Jeremy Jarmon acting out the Colonel Jessup courtroom scene from A Few Good Men. Seems Jeremy was an actor in his high school days and he played the Jessup role in a high school play. He does a great job of remembering the dialogue and had us cracking up. Jarmon proved to be a great interview and other highlights included his future with the Redskins and how he’s preparing for next season plus the fact that he thinks Albert Haynesworth will play for the Redskins next season. Pickled Hogs Radio: Ken Harvey Interview

Ken, Kevin and I had an awesome interview with former Redskins great Ken Harvey last night. One of my favorite former players Ken is a great guy and a great interview. I have transcribed parts of the interview below and Hogs Haven will have more of the interview soon on their site. On going against Joe Jacoby

My first year I went against Joe Jacoby and I never knew a human being could be that strong. I mean, I thought I was strong and he hit me with one arm and I was like…my god this is the NFL. I mean I didn’t realize an individual could be that big and that strong. I got him back when he was a little older and his knees weren’t so good.

On an altercation with former Redskin Sterling Palmer

I was lined up against Sterling Palmer and he was…I was on the punt team and he was on the punt return team and you know like people believe sometimes, you know you’re lined up and we’re talking to each other. He’s like “man it’s hot out here” and I’m like yeah, this is Arizona. We’re having a good conversation and then they hike the ball and he’s balled up his fist and he hit me in the stomach as hard as he could and caught me off guard. I almost dropped to my knees because the blow, I mean it was right in the right spot. I ran down but I couldn’t really run and I was so happy somebody made the tackle and I just ran to the sideline. And I was just like, you know in my mind if I ever catch that guy again I’m going to try to kill him. I ended up coming to the Skins and I see he actually turned out to be a good guy.

On if he still practices martial arts

I haven’t practiced in a long time. I could fake it, if somebody came at me I’d get in a pose and probably do the Karate Kid stance or something. But, all they’d have to do is kick my bad knee and I’d topple over.

Yeah, I’d have to do the crane kick. You know, I tell everybody you just have to figure out which knee is bad…don’t kick the wrong knee.

On who would have won in a fight between him and Greg Lloyd circa the 1990’s

I mean obviously in my mind I would’ve won. Back when I played, I was one of the meanest. So I would, I would’ve been almost like Tyson…I’d have been biting ear parts and stuff like that. I’d have figured out a way to win.

On stories from his playing days

One time I talked to my dad and my dad was like…you know he saw me help a quarterback up off the ground and he’s like son you’re way to nice, you’re not supposed to be helping nobody up. And so the next time I went out there and just tried to kill the quarterback and I busted the upper part of my lip. So I got a scar there now today, just because I was trying to impress my dad.

The greatest feeling in the world is when you…it’s one thing if you can beat somebody physically but when you see you take the life out of them mentally and you see in their eyes and it’s just like, man I hope this game is over with, I hope this game is over with. To me, that’s the greatest.
