I See Your Jess Atkinson & Raise You One Ali Haji-Sheikh
With the 2012 version of the Washington Redskins set to start training camp Thursday, I thought it would be fitting to revisit a trip I took to Carlisle, PA back in 1988. I made the trip north to PA from NOVA with my childhood friend Chris Hairfield and had the opportunity to watch the defending Super Bowl Champs prepare for the 1988 season. Along the way I scored a Super Bowl XXII poster and secured the autographs of 20+ Redskins. Twenty-four years later I’m certain that I have a one of kind piece of memorabilia here.
Among the autographs that I secured, I scored not 1, not 2…but 3 kickers! Despite the fact the Redskins drafted Chip Lohmiller in the 2nd round of the 88′ NFL draft, they still felt in necessary to bring 2 other horrible kickers to camp. I am 100% CERTAIN that I’m the only person in the world that has both a Jess Atkinson & Ali Haji-Sheikh autograph on the same poster.
I have 2/3′s of the Posse…Gary Clark and Ricky Sanders.
Ed Simmons signed his autograph on the awesome picture of his pancake block.
Wilber Marshall’s signature is upside down. I got Marshall’s autograph several times and he always signed upside down and backwards.
Dave Butz signed, it was his last season.
One of my favorite all-time Skins Neal Olkewicz signed, as did the late Mel Kaufman.
Looking at this poster brings back great memories. Hard to believe we are 6 months away from the 25th anniversary of the Redskins 1987 Super Bowl win and that amazing 2nd quarter against the Denver Broncos. Here’s to more memories, HTTR.
Cheers and Hail

Redskins Of Lore: Neal Olkewicz
From 1979 to 1989 the heart of the Redskins defense was found right in the middle of the field, wearing #52. Neal “Olk Dog” Olkewicz appeared in 150 regular season games and although tackles were not an official stat at the time, Neal surpassed (at least) 1,500 tackles in his career. Yep, Neal averaged over 10 tackles per game.
The Redskins dynasty era of 1982-1991 was not comprised of flashy free agents who commanded $100 million dollar contracts and huge signing bonuses. The Redskins roster of that era was made up of a lot of guys who were low round or undrafted players who worked hard and got every ounce out of their ability and more. Neal was undrafted out of Maryland, but started for 11 years in the NFL, winning 2 Super Bowls and he’s one of the 70 Greatest Redskins.
While I was recently thumbing thru my old Redskins photos and autographs, I came across the above picture. The picture came from a 1987 commemorative magazine celebrating the Redskins Super Bowl win. The short story talks about how Neal made 2 of the biggest defensive plays the Redskins had during the playoffs, plays that enabled the Skins to make it to the Super Bowl. It also talks about how Neal, the team’s player rep, kept the Skins together during the strike. Although Neal seemed to be in the twilight of his career, he came back in 88′ and was the named the team’s defensive MVP. He was…a bad-ass.
I did find Neal’s autograph, it’s on a regular piece of paper. Simple, straight forward and after nearly 25 years, still holding up strong…just like old #52. Thanks Neal.
Cheers and Hail

Neal Olkewicz Interview
Neal Olkewicz played 11 seasons with the Washington Redskins and became a fan favorite for his “blue collar” work ethic. Along the way, “Olky” collected over 1,500 tackles and was the anchor of Richie Petibon’s top 10 defenses. He also won 2 Super Bowl rings and a place on the 70 Greatest Redskin’s list. Olkdog was kind enough to grant me this interview in which he discusses a wide range of topics including his beard, the 5 O’clock club, and NFL Union issues.
Neal, you are a true Redskin and a true gentleman. Thanks for the interview.
Cheers and Hail
