Flashback Friday: Redskins/Steelers
This post originally debuted at Hogs Haven
Each Friday Hogs Haven will travel back in time to recap a previous game against this weeks current Redskins opponent.
It’s been nearly 20 years since the Redskins defeated the Steelers. We have to travel all the way back to November 17, 1991…back to a stadium that’s long since gone, Three Rivers Stadium. It was a typical November day in Pittsburgh, 39 degrees and gloomy. It was also a typical day for the 91’ Skins, the Redskins did what they did week in and week out that year…they kicked ass! The final score, Redskins 41 Steelers 14.
The Steelers were led by former Maryland Terrapin Neil O’Donnell who would pass for 289 yards and 2 TD’s. Most of O’Donnell’s yards came in garbage time…the Redskins led 27-0 in the 4th quarter. Steeler running backs Merril Hodge and Barry Foster managed only 33 yards on 11 carries. Redskins DE’s Jumpy Geathers (2 sacks) and Jason Buck (1.5 sacks) led the defensive charge. Current Detroit Lions GM Martin Mayhew had an interception for the Redskins.
On offense, it was textbook 91’ Skins. Mark Rypein threw for 325 yds and 2 TD passes. Each member of the “Posse” caught a touchdown pass. Gary Clark had a 49 yard TD, Ricky Sanders a 40 yarder and Art Monk caught an 11 yard TD. Monk would finish the day with 130 yards on 8 catches. Gerald Riggs had 2 one yard touchdown runs…while Ricky Ervins carried 23 times for 84 yards.
The win against the Steelers pushed the Redskins to an 11-0 mark…the Redskins haven’t won 11 games in a season since. Depressing I guess…but all will be fine if one Redskins fan will shove a terrible towel up a Steelers fan’s ass tonight.
Cheers and Hail
